Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art through her aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse, so she could continue her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay saw how art was powerful in promoting social activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught how to express herself through the arts. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and obtained certificates in English and African American Studies. While she was studying, DuVernay started to become interested in producing for television journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to look over the residence that one of the members of the jury and take a look at their trash. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity sector. DuVernay started her career working as a junior press assistant at a small film studio just after she had graduated from college. In 1999, she founded her own private company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
